Newton-le-Willows Community High School is the result of the merger in 1971 of the former Grammar School (opened in 1930) and Newton Secondary Modern School (opened in 1940 and re-named Selwyn Jones Secondary Modern in the 1960's). The original name of the merged school was Selwyn Jones High School. It was re-named Newton High School in 1988, then following community status being granted to the school, was re-named Newton-le-Willows Community High School in 1991.
