Mall of Memphis Site
This is the site of the country's largest failed indoor shopping mall. What was once a large, proud shopping mall opened with much enthusiasm, is now 96 acres of dirt. Once the largest mall in the Mid-South (with anchors Service Merchandise, Dillard's, Thalhimer's, JCPenney), and the home of the only public ice skating rink in Memphis. The Mall of Memphis meant a lot to a lot of people, and poor public perception fueled by the media is most likely the reason it's no longer around. i've actually read that the mall had gotten safer, but its reputation was already so bad that it couldn't be saved. also in its later days the smaller stores were mostly one-offs and not nationally recognized and never survived long. it truly is sad what has happened to Memphis, and Mayor Herrenton is only going to allow it to get worse. the blacks of the city continue to vote for him just because he's a black man and not because of what he can do or has done for the city. meanwhile Memphis continues to decline. Fed Ex won't stay forever, and Memphis will end up looking like Detroit unless something is done about the horrible city management. |

I grew up just a small way from that mall.. My mom went to it as a teenager.. The memories may be faded, but they are still a part of me, and my childhood. |

I remember shopping trips from my home in NW Mississippi to the Mall of Memphis. It was wonderful when it opened in the early 80s. In the end, I think the reputation of the Mall of Memphis was worse than the reality. Regardless, the opening of the Wolfchase Galleria on Interstate 40 east of Memphis sealed its fate. Once the anchor stores started closing, other businesses hightailed it from there. After little more than 20 years of existence, it was all over for the Mall of Memphis. What a waste! God bless. |

Unlike a previous post that despite apparently buying some shoes there, knows nothing about the area- the mall declined mainly due to newer retail facilities and evolving neighborhood demographics. There are numerous proposals concerning the sites redevelopment. |
