Dr. Vine Utley House

USA / Connecticut / Niantic / Roxbury Road, 155
 house, interesting place

The house was built around 1750. Dr. Utley was a country doctor who lived between 1768 and 1836. He treated nearby residents during the Smallpox Plague of 1777, first using live smallpox to vaccinate patients and later less-deadly cow pox. Utley regularly corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and was interested in gerontology, interviewing many elderly from all walks of life.

  • Photo #1 is a WPA Architectural Survey (Historic American Buildings Survey) photo taken between 1935 and 1942.
  • I used to pass this house a lot at night and was always creeped out by it when I saw the basement light always on. I had a wild imagination that they were doing some sort of interrogation on prisoners in that house.
  • They actually just left the basement light on when they were renovating this house several years ago. It is now occupied by a resident of the town, and is no longer owned by the state.
