One of the best camping places in Uruguay. It's great for families who seek for a quiet place away from urban chaos and still exciting for young people who want to have a great time camping in the wilderness, meeting new people and enjoying the Atlantic Ocean's waves.
"Santa Teresa" Fort was started to built by Portuguese on 1762, and completed, years later by Spanish. It was centre of conflict along the centuries: Spanish against Portuguese, Spanish against English, Spanish against Creole, Orientals (pre-Uruguayan) against Portuguese... and ones born the new country (Uruguay), was occupied by General Oribe's forces on the "Big War" (La Guerra Grande). Finally was abandoned and sand and wind cover it under a huge sand's dune.
On 1928, a Archaeologist Horacio Arredondo, begun to cave and recuperate the fort to the Humanity all. He plant 2 million exotic great value trees, in order to fix the dunes, in a 3.000 hectares of a National Park, called "Parque Nacional de Santa Teresa".
There are 60 km of trails to walk between Nature, trees and coloured birds, one mile from oceanic coast with white sand beach and waves.
There are, for example: a "Rosedal" wich have more than 330 roses of different spices, and a big greenhouse tempered with steam who have tropical rare plants, a museum, a huge bird cage and a "Carassius" fish hatchery pond.
In summer, thousand of tourists comes to Santa Teresa Park to camping on a very comfortable accommodations (place to fire, showers, bathrooms, laundries, groceries and fruits
