  • The place 'Nowgown' or 'Nagaon' is a subdivision and district headquarters today with the same name district stands. The name "Nagaon" is derived from 'newly settled village.' The Ahom king Pratapsimha @ Siuchengpha @ Burha Raja A.D. 1603-41 ordered his Revenue and Administrative Chief Momai Tamuli Barbarua to give new settlements on the bank of river Kalong i.e. at Khagarijan, which is old name of Nagaon. The newly settled village is known as Nagaon i.e., newly settled village. The people were drawn from various parts of the State and from different clans. So they were known as Bebejia means variety or mixed. Tai-Ahom name is 'Ban-On Mau,' i.e. newly settled village. The district Nagaon was a part of old Kadali, Kopili, Dabaka, Kingdom of Hamsadhvaja, Dimalang, Swarnapitha etc. Some of the ancient rulers of Nagaon region were: Hamsadhvaj, Vasundaravarman, Viswasundaravarmana, Bicharpatipha, Khurapha, Mahmanikya, etc. Nagaon was under the Varmana, Salstambhas, Kachari, Ahom, Mughals, Koch rulers. This was one of the first British districts of Assam. During last days of the A:homs, Nagaon was known for -Bhotai Deka and Sindhura Hazarika, who were the rebels against the A:hom Royal Court as Moamariyas.
  • Here lies the residence of Late Rejib Uddin Ahmed, Retd. Head Master of Government Boys' High School, one of the Famous Litterateur and a English Scholar of Post British Era. Graduated from the famous & pioneer Cotton College and later earned his B.T. degree from Dacca University, one of the most prestigious University of that time. A regular writer for the column "writers to the editor" of "The Assam Tribune". Later his eldest son, Late Saleh Uddin Ahmed (Popularly known as Kaamal) also brought laurels to this esteemed family of this Nowgong Town. Served the Assam Government sucessfully for 35 years, a great human being and an active social worker of his time, involved with all the leading organisations of the town as well of the state. Left behind his wife Mrs. Rukeya Sultana Ahmed, an extremely talented writer, a poet and a teacher in vernacular language, and two son, one of whom is an Instructional Designer & a Content Writer, 1st Assamese to achieve this feet, now heading an E-Learning Company in Maharashtra, the younger one is a talented Lawn Tennis Player and a coach and a talented daughter-in-law, who is a All India Radio singer and persuing Masters Degree in Sociology from University of Dibrugarh.
