Housing complex developed by Japan Housing Corporation. Developed in 1958, the complex is considered to be one of the more unique among the similar urban complexes (known in Japanese as "Danchi") that sprung up in various Japanese cities in the post-WW2 recovery era. While the general perception of Danchis tend to be that of mass-produced standardized buildings mechanically lined up to make the most efficient use of construction effort and land, this Danchi stands out in both the design of the 3- or 4- story apartments and the 2 story "terrace-houses" that comprise the Danchi, as well as their combination and the overall layout within the complex. The seemingly uniformly designed apartments and terrace houses actually employ several different variations, and the way they have been placed within a mild "S"-like curve is a work of fine art within the practical needs of providing affordable living space to an urban population. As of 2010, having stood here already for more than 50 years, the complex has certainly outlived its intended duration, and the majority of the units are now unoccupied except for a few households here and there. A redevelopment plan to demolish all existing buildings and to replace them with new ones already exist but has not been implemented, apparently because agreement has not been reached with residents of nearby houses who are opposed to the proposed new six-story apartments that would deprive them of sunlight, as well as being a sore to the eye. In the meantime the Danchi is still here as if this space has been carved out from the 1960s-70s. The open space in the middle of the complex is popular in the spring for beautiful cherry blossoms, and many ex-residents who have spent parts of their earlier lives are known to come visit here to cherish their fond memories.
