Khatkhate (खटखटे) is the last name commonly found in Goud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community from Goa and Konkan province of Maharashtra State in India. It has originated from the title "Khatkhate" or "Khatkhatay" (a Persian word/phrase) meaning the most important officer in Emperor's court. It is derived from the original names Shenavi-Khatkhate (शेणवी-खटखटे) or Shenai-Khatkhate (शेणै-खटखटे). Besides this, Khatkhate is also a delicious vegetable dish of Saraswat Brahmins.

  • No Khatkhate family member live now in Khatkhate Wadi. All Khatkhate gone to Mumbai and other contries.
  • Khatkhate Ladu is perhaps not connected with Khatkhate gharana. I found quite a few engineering inventions by Khatkhates in Google search, and Khatkhate Ladu did not seem be one of them.
  • Khatkhate (खटखटे) Ladu is also known as Kadkade (कडकडे) Ladu and Khadkhade (खडखडे) Ladu. As I rationalize, it's because of the noise people make while eating it (like kadkad/कडकड or khadkhad/खडखड noise). It's still the very popular hot item in Konkan, especially in Sawantwadi/Malvan area. It's possible that Khatkhate Ladu was invented by or named after some famous Khatkhate 100s of years ago.
