Lake Placid: Historic Adirondack Main Street (Lake Placid, New York)

Lake Placid, a tiny village (pop. 2,700) in the remote Adirondack Mountains of Northern New York, first became known as a mountain resort town in the later 1800s. Lake Placid is known as the "Olympic Village" because it has twice hosted the Olympic Winter Games: first in 1932; and again in 1980. The famous "Miracle On Ice" hockey game, which brought a surprise win to USA over the USSR, was played at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. Today, Lake Placid has one of the best-documented historic Main Streets anywhere; a detailed history dating back to the formation of the village is available for nearly every building now standing on the Olympic Village's Adirondack Main Street.
