This site is all that is left of Fort St. John, also known as the Old Spanish Fort. It was constructed in the 1700's as a defense for New Orleans on the shore of Bayou St. John. In the early 1800's it was sold to a private owner and converted into an amusement park (Old Spanish Fort Amusement Park) which was in business until 1926. In the late 1920's, it was also near the original location of Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park (before it moved to the site of Milneburg). Today, the fort rests in its location by Bayou St. John, serving no specific purpose at this time.
