Erected in 1907, this is an octagonal, iron skeleton tower modeled after the light tower at Cape Fear, NC. Visible for 20 miles off-shore, the lighthouse is among the most powerful in America, and is well preserved. Lighthouse Point gets its name from this structure. The skeleton structure supported the longevity of the lighthouse, which survived numerous hurricanes. The September 17, 1947 hurricane produced winds of 155 mph at the lighthouse and destroyed the head keeper's residence.
