Situated 1.5 miles south of Île Sainte-Thérèse, it forms part of the islands of Varennes. It is less than 1200 feet long and 900 feet wide. Appearing in the Gazeteer of Quebec (1969), the name is without doubt very old, being used on a map of Verchères published in 1929 by the ministry of Colonization and Fisheries. If the date of the first use is unknown, it does not make any difference in its attribution to one named Mathurin Masta (1643-1688), master mason, who lived all his life at Pointe-aux-Trembles, precisely opposite the islands of Varennes, northeast of the Island of Montreal. One must distinguish this master mason from an Abenaquis of St. Francis of the Lake, Pierre-Paul Osunkhirhine, alias Masta, who, converted to Protestantism in the 1830s, evangelized among the Abenaquis. This island is also identified locally as Mastaï and Île de la Marée.
