Located in northeastern Lituania, covers area of 1229 km². Divided into 10 elderships. Administrative centre - Utena city.
Municipality is know for stunning nature, part of municipality is preserved by Aukštaitija national and Labanoras regional parks. There are many lakes, the biggest is Alaušas, while Tauragnas is the deepest lake of Lithuania. The longest rivers are Vyžuona and Šventoji. Temperature variantions here are quite noticeable, snow crust at winter frequantly is the deepest in country. Many industrial companies are settled in Utena city. Highways A6 (Kaunas-Daugavpils) ir A14 (Vilnius-Utena) are extended across the municiplity area.
