The Cowpens Manufacturing Co. was organized in 1889 and constructed a cotton mill in Cowpens. The mill would close due to strikes, fires, and the market over a number of years but reopened repeatedly. A chemical company owned the mill and didnt dispose of the chemicals after the company closed the mill. In 1999 the mill caught fire to the chemicals and waste stored in the mill destroying the mill. All that remains today are the brick walls of the old mill.
