The main terminal was originally built in 1934. Visitors will notice that many doorknobs, window sills, countertops, and plumbing fixtures still have the name or the initials of Abe Shushan, whom the airport was originally named after. This building was covered with a concrete facade in the 1950s to make it bombproof during the Cold War, but after Hurricane Katrina this has been removed to expose the original Art Deco facade.
