Indio, California, is a U.S. city located in the Coachella Valley of Southern California's desert region. Located 26 miles east of Palm Springs, The population was 49,116 at the 2000 census. According to the book History of the Coachella Valley Water District, the word indio is Spanish for Indian. Indio sits on an earlier site of a Cahuilla village, Teikweit before the 1880's.

  • Still haven't figured out why the signs on the I-10 say "Indio". Pretty dirty. Oh! The casinos. That's why... The Fantasy and Spotlight casinos are out here. Pretty dirty too... Visit the Agua or the Spa in Palm Springs. Much nicer.
  • Indio is a town rich in history and activities. There's festivals all-year round, especially fun is the Coachella Valley Music Fest each year in April.
  • Indio is the oldest city in the Coachella Valley, the eastern valley has a rich agricultural history, and for a long time was as much a quiet peaceful suburban town as anywhere else in southern california. Just because it didn't gain the same cache and glamour as Palm Springs doesn't make it "dirty" or render it any less significant.
