Family home of the Romanovs, chosen in 1613 to be Russia's royal line.

It is said that Nikita Romanov, brother-in-law of Ivan the Terrible and grandfather of Mikhail Fyodorovich, first of the Romanov tsars constructed this building. The white stone basement dates from the 1500s and the brick upper floor from 1674 and the top level is wood.

In the mid 19th century the building was extensively restored as a museum. Now, it is home to a branch of the State History Museum whose exhibits illustrate the everyday life of a 16th and 17th century noble family with period furniture, clothing and household items.

With its unusual ceramic stoves, gilded Flanders leather wall-coverings and carved wooden ceilings, it presents a unique picture of 17th century luxury. The low, steep, narrow passageways, though authentic, are a nightmare for any tall visitor.
