Burlington Prairie Forest Preserve

Part of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, Burlington Prairie is one of those very rare parcels of land that through a series of fortunate land use events, remains as totally undisturbed prairie. It is an isolated bit of raised, sandy alluvial soil separated from the west, north and east by a wetland moat, and from the rest of the parent farm on the south by a 20 foot high railroad embankment.

There are over 215 native species resident here in this 35 acre prairie and wetland, which is now a dedicated Illinois Nature Preserve. Here is the delightful State Endangered White Lady Slipper Orchid and also the diminutive and fascinating Carex crawei, along with a host of other rare butterflies and plants.
