A major base & airfield for the Japanese starting in 1942, Lae was a key base for Japanese air, sea and land operations in the area for less than a year when the Austrailians liberated it in late 1943. Used briefly by the US postwar, the airfield was later abandoned for a more modern facility to the northwest. The WWII runway is still visible here.
This was also Amelia Earharts last stop before she & her copilot dissapeared.
