store / shop, shopping mall
This mall opened in 1988. When it opened to the public, its anchor stores were Sears, K-Mart, and Hess's. Today it has four anchor stores, which are Sears, K-Mart, Macy's, and T.J. Maxx. It includes a food court. Before the mall was built, the site was a nature preserve.
The environmental groups were concerned that the construction of the mall would endanger wildlife and pollute the wetlands, which is located on the opposite side of Route 337 (today is called Great Flats Land and Trail Preserve).
After a 10-year battle with aquifer environmentalists, the Wilmorite Corporation (former owner of the mall) got a go-ahead to construct the mall on a former property of the old Campbell Estate.
The mall is built on the site once owned by the Veeder Family. Harman Albertse Veeder bought the land in 1672, and built the home on it, which was demolished before the mall was built, it had 26 bedrooms. The mall property includes a graveyard, which is located next to the mall's front side entrance near Macy's. It is a family cemetery that dates back to 1715.
From 1988 to 2007, the mall included a carousel, which was dismantled in January 2007.
The mall management sold it in 2006, because of its maintenance costs.
The mall also includes a six-screen movie cinema, that has stadium-style seating, and a fountain in the mall's center court.
The time when the mall was built and opened in 1988, it was own by Wilmorite. Today, its new owners are Macerich.
The mall is located on Campbell Road (Route 337) off Exit 2 on I-890.
