Kalofer Nunnery "The Presentation of God's Mother to the Temple"

Bulgaria / Plovdiv / Kalofer /
nunnery, 1860s construction, Bulgarian Orthodox Church

The Kalofer Monastery (nunnery) "The Presentation of the Mother of God to the Temple" is situated in the Balkan town of Kalofer, on the right bank of the Tundzha River.
According to a manuscript from 1863, the Kalofer Nunnery was founded in the 18th century by the Rila monk Dorotey. During the banditry attacks in 1799 and in 1804 the monastery was destroyed, but in 1819 it was rebuilt and a girls' school was opened there. With the help of Nayden Gerov (consul in Plovdiv) nuns from the monastery collected aid in Russia and with these funds in 1862 the church and residential buildings were built. Near the church there is a holy spring with a small chapel "St. Panteleimon", built in 1825.
In 1877, during the Russo-Turkish War, the Kalofer Monastery was looted and burned, but was later rebuilt.
