Woody Island

Originally settled in 1852 as an ice warehousing station for a Russian ice-harvesting operation, which supplied ice to California during the California gold rush. The first road in Alaska was built on Woody Island to support the ice operation.

A Baptist Church mission and orphanage was established in 1893.

The U. S. Military began using the island in 1911 as a Navy radio station. The FAA set up operations beginning in 1941.
