Grenfell Tower is a 24-storey apartment building completed in 1974 and managed by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO). The building contained 120 one- and two-bedroom apartments and underwent a major renovation costing £8.6 million in 2015-16, which included recladding the aluminium composite facade with new thermal insulation and replacing all windows on the building.

On 14 June 2017 a fire started on the fourth floor of the building during the early morning hours and quickly burned out of control. The London Fire Brigade were first called to the fire at 00:54 BST and eventually dispatched 40 fire engines and specialty units and over 250 firefighters to the scene, but the fire went out of control and eventually destroyed much of the building above the fire origin point.
