Baengnokdam

Korea (South) / Cheju / Sogwipo /
 summit, crater lake

Baeknokdam is a crater lake on South Korea's tallest mountain. The area leading into the crater and on down to the lake itself is closed off from the public. Beautiful views of the lake can be seen from the portion of the crater's rim still open to the public. In English, Beaknokdam translates to White Deer Lake. While there are legends and stories behind the origin of its name, wild deer inhabit a large portion of Hallasan National Park. They can also be seen drinking water from the lake, which is another reason the waters are protected.
