Baraut is a city and a municipal board in Baghpat district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Earlier it was under Meerut District which was bifurcated into Meerut and Baghpat districts. This small town is mostly inhabited by traders and farmers, most of the population consists of Jats, Muslims, Jains and Viswakarmas with Sikhs being the minority. The city is famous for its Jain temples and grand Jain functions organised every year. Baraut is at an average elevation of 231 metres (757 feet). As of 2001 India census it had a population of 85,822.
