Hellenistic and Roman Apamea in Phrygia succeeded an older town called Kelainai (Celaenae in Latin), which had served the Persians as the satrapial center of Greater Phrygia in western Asia Minor. In the Christian period it became the seat of a bishop. The remains are located at modern Dinar.
