Location of the transatlantic radio receiver of Radio Central. The transmitter site was located at Rocky Point, NY. Radio Central went operational on November 5, 1921, and the first transatlantic commercial telephone service was initiated here on January 7, 1927. The Rocky Point facilities were demolished in the 1970s.
The Rocky Point facility was closed in 1978, rendered obsolete by satellite communications.
