Pete Maffeo was a popular mayor(1957-67) and ice cream shop owner who was admired for his service to the community. Joe Sutton was the caretaker of the Nanaimo Bastion and Deverill Square Park for many years.
The Civic Arena was built here in 1939 and was demolished in late 2006. Starting in 2009 the City of Nanaimo has undergone a multimillion redevelopment of the park and is set to begin phase two of the project in 2011.
