Henry Clay Statue (New Orleans, Louisiana)

USA / Louisiana / Gretna / New Orleans, Louisiana

The bronze statue of Henry Clay was created by Hyram Powers and sits on top of a tall stone pillar. Henry Clay was a well known U. S. Senator representing Kentucky, but was looked on as the key defender of the interests of the western states and territories.

The bronze portion of the statue shows him standing next to a pedestal or podium, in a relaxed position, either debating or speaking about a topic. The stone pedestal varies in width and designs along its height. At the base are four plaques.

The statue was originally situated at the intersection of Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue, but was removed in 1900 to the present location to make room for the street car lines. This statue was the only statue made in an ambitious plan to line Canal Street with statues.
