Outgoing Mauritanian leader, Colonel Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, has officially inaugurated the country's first copper/gold mine in Guelb Moghrein in a ceremony near the northern desert town of Akjoujt, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI). The mine came on stream in October 2006 but official inauguration had been delayed while engineering and resource reports were approved by the Mauritanian government.

Production at the Guelb Moghrein mines is being undertaken by the Company of Copper Mines of Mauritania (SMCM), a partnership between Canadian company First Quantum Minerals Ltd - with 80 percent, and Mauritania's Guelb Moghrein Mines d'Akjoujt SA with 20 percent.
