Originally an Army/Air Force communications site, NRTF Awase was transferred to the Navy in 1966. The 132-acre facility is now operated by NAVCOMM Det Okinawa and is part of NAVCOMTELSTA. They provide Low Frequency (LF) submarine broadcast, several High Frequency (HF) communications circuits, LINK 11 air-to-ground communications, and electronic maintenance. The tower used for LF-transmission is 610 ft ( 186 metres) tall.
