Original location of the Revolutionary War fortifications at West Point with two main batteries near water level, protected by several redoubts higher up. The original name given by Dutch navigators was Martelaer's Rock, and the English colonialists continued to call the two or three mile upriver stretch to Storm King Mountain Matelaer's Reach.
The famous "Great Chain" was stretched from West Point to Constitution Island to prevent passage of British ships between Albany and New York City.
Access to the island is by a tram which runs from the Cold Spring train station (free parking)
