The Sikorsky bridge an 1,800-foot open-grate structure crossing the Housatonic River at the Merritt-Wilbur Cross transition was completed in 1939. In December 1998, the state put to bid a project to replace the bridge, with a six-lane structure (four thru and two operational) including a bike path/walkway on the north side. Demolition of the old bridge and construction of the new bridge was started in 2001. In January 2007, the new bridge is open in both directions and the construction is almost complete. The photo shown is two years old.

Now in January 2008, the picture shows the completed bridge.

  • The 1939 bridge had only four lanes.
  • IT WAS ALWAYS COOL TO BE ABLE TO LOOK DOWN THROUGH THE STEEL DECK
