Nucor Steel - Darlington is a premier producer of angles, channels, flats, rounds, rebar and hexagons. Since beginning operations in 1969 as Nucor Corporation's first bar mill, Nucor - Darlington has grown to become the largest bar producer in the Southeast. We have a state-of-the-art 160-ton DC electric furnace supplying two highly efficient rolling mills. It produces special bar quality, merchant bar quality, and reinforcing bar products.

Darlington is also the first three-high "jumping mill" in the Western hemisphere. "Jumping" described the electric motors, which raised and lowered the mill as rectangular steel billets were passed back and forth between rolls.

Darlington was Nucor's seventh division and would operate under the name of Eastern Carolina Steel Division. Construction began in August 1968, and one year later the plant was fully operational. Ken Iverson, President (1965-1995), described Darlington as a "forerunner of a new generation of minimills."
