Fort Pike was built as part of the US Third System coastal defenses to guard Pass Rigolets, LA. It was built beginning in 1819 and substantially finished by 1827.

It had a single tier of casemates in a curved arc, with additional armament mounted en barbette, and a landward facing bastion.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with twenty-eight 24-pounder guns, six 12-pounder guns, nine flank howitzers, five 8" heavy seacoast howizters and one 10" heavy mortar for a total of 49 guns.

The fort was used until 1890. It is now a Louisiana State Historic Site, and was partially repaired in 1935. It was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

It was used during filming of the movie "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" to represent Fort Sumter.
