The church of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of Nocera Umbra, and co-cathedral of the Diocese of Assisi- Nocera Umbra - Gualdo Tadino. The building is located at the highest point of Nocera Umbra . The area was occupied by the medieval fortress for which the function of the church took place in the eleventh century private chapel .
Of the original Romanesque church remains , however , only the left side door decorated with a cross made ​​of stone and the octagonal apse , as a result of the destruction Frederick was demolished and later rebuilt in 1448 in the Franciscan style . In July 1487 were buried in the church the relics of St. Rinaldo , the patron saint of the city , whose remains now lie beneath the altar. The bell tower was finished in 1544.
Subsequent interventions were made in the late eighteenth century with the transformation of the baroque cathedral and the creation of six side chapels carved into the walls of the nave . The facade is very simple and has decorative stone of 1925 , the apse is semicircular .
Of the six lateral chapels are worthy of note is the fourth and the third chapel on the left ; the fourth is a series of wall paintings and three large canvases depicting the Marian iconography : Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple, Annunciation , Madonna hired, St. Charles Borromeo and St. Anne, all the works of Julius Caesar Angels painted between the sixteenth and XVII secolo1 ; in the third , numerous shrines and a fresco of 1582 . The decoration of the apse is due to Elpidio Petrignani .
