It is one of the oldest public libraries in Asia and have collection of many rare books.

Renowned Bengali Poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta spent his last days here. On this ground Sri Aurobindo Ghose gave his speech now famous as Uttarpara Speech- In which he spells out about basic religion (Sanatan Dharma)

Situated beside river Ganges, it is a beautiful place to watch the waves break slowly on the Library ghat or to read books and magazine inside. On the steps there will be a big "adda" during early evening. Where the local students will come to chit chat and warm up their brains with inellectual discourse.

  • This is not only Bengali's pride but it makes residance of Uttarpara very proud too. Its our heritage and we should take very good care of it. In my opinion the fairs happening should be stopped and instead should be promoted as one of the heritage site and tourist spots to increase awareness and promote as one of the prime tourist destination like Shantiniketan.
