London Stadium, commonly known as Olympic Stadium, is a stadium located at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at Stratford in the London Borough of Newham. It served as the centrepiece of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events. Ground was broken in in 2007 and the stadium was constructed from May 2008 to March 2011.

The stadium has an all-seater capacity of 80,000, consisting of a 25,000-seat permanent lower tier and a 55,000-seat upper tier. It has an exterior wrap consisting of 2.5 metre wide fabric panels twisted at 90-degree angles to allow entry to the stadium at ground level and held in place with tensioned cables. Spectator services such as food outlets and toilet pods will be outside the stadium. A cable-supported roof structure will cover 2/3 of the stands.

After the Olympics, the Olympic Stadium were to be taken over by West Ham United F.C. however the club had since declined to move until significant renovations were completed. The club occupied the stadium in time for the 2016 season.

  • The wonderful plans that were submitted for the Olympic bid which showed a roof resembling the muscles have now been scaled back, so the proposed stadium looks more like a foil jam tart case. The top two tiers are temporary and will be removed after the games so it will look even more like a jam tart case afterwards.
  • Yes i agree with you. I really liked the other stadium design resembling the muscles of the human body, and thats what sports about using your muscles. Oh well never mind
