Rochester is a historic town among the 5 Medway towns. It is the oldest of these and is famous for its Norman Castle and Cathedral and as the water-hole of Victorian novelist Charles Dickens. It is located on the east banks of the River
Rochester was officially a city (though never a very big one) for a long time, but following administrative issues, it ended up losing its city status in 1998 and has since been trying to regain it.
Rochester is the second smallest of the Medway towns with a population of 27,000 as it does not have many suburbs. However, there are many suburbs in Strood on the opposite side of the Medway, which have a population of 33,000.
