On October 9, 1966, the “Hare Krishna” (i.e. first Harinam) mantra was chanted publicly by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada for the first time outside of India, marking the birth of the spiritual movement in the West. This historic American Elm tree at the south end of the Central Grove section was the site of the first event chanting, dancing, playing tambourines and cymbals, and seeking Krishna which was also attended by beatnik poet Allen Ginsburg who lived nearby. Swami Prabhupada later founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness at 26 Second Avenue.
