Pig Point

The main regional seaport from the 1600's to around 1910 when steamships stopped serving Pig Point (Bristol Landing.) Once containing stores, a cannery, a lumber mill, a grainery, a fishery, churches, tobacco inspection station, and a horse racing track, now only about 15 homes remain (all on either Wrighton Rd. or Blueshirt Rd.) No longer is there public access to the river at the end of Wrighton Rd., but there is at Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, the main entrance to which is in Pig Point. From here upriver on August 22, 1814, Commodore Joshua Barney exploded his Maryland Flotilla to prevent capture by the British forces anchored between Pig Point and Mt. Calvert.
