Zorgvlied Cemetery | park, interesting place

Netherlands / Noord-Holland / Amsterdam / Amsteldijk, 273
 park, cemetery, interesting place

Although within the municipal boundaries of the city of Amsterdam, this is actually the cemetery of the city of Amstelveen. Reason for this is the expansion of Amsterdam over the last centuries. What used to be Nieuwer Amstel (Amstelveen) now is Amsterdam. The cemetery still remains part of Amstelveen.

Numerous famous (at least in the Netherlands) are buried here. As an example: Oscar Carré, Annie M.G. Schmidt, Manfred Langer and Frank Govers.

Every christmas eve the cemetery is illuminated by candle and oil flames in order to commemorate loved ones. In dutch this is called 'Lichtjesnacht (Night of the Lights). People bring their own candles to be put on the graves of their loved ones.
