When Waterloo Place was built it cut through Old Calton Cemetery (still extant about 1/2 mile to the west of New Calton Cemetery). Approximately 300 graves which were located in the path of the road were moved along with their monuments to New Calton Cemetery, which was established for that purpose. New Calton Cemetery was, however, also made much larger than needed to allow for additional burials due to the population growth in the city. Once the graves had been moved (1817-1820), the cemetery was opened to the public in 1820, but the first recorded new interment which was not a relocation from Old Calton Cemetery was in 1817.
