Morgantina

Morgantina is an archaeological site with evidence for occupation from the late Sicilian Bronze Age to the Late Roman Republic. An Ausonian hut has been excavated on the hill of Cittadella at the NE end of the site; later, the Cittadella was occupied by an Archaic settlement with mixed Greek and indigenous Sikel characteristics. In the fifth century BCE, settlement moved to the plateau at the top of the ridge known as Serra Orlando, where an orthogonal plan delimited residential blocks and an agora (market and public gathering area). Especially well-preserved are remains dating to the Hellenistic period and the reign of Hieron II of Syracuse (3rd c. BCE), including private houses, a theater and assembly place, stoas, sanctuaries, and an early bath complex.
