St Stephen Walbrook (London)

United Kingdom / England / London / Walbrook
Grade I Listed (UK), anglican church, 17th century construction

Church of England. A great use of interior space by Wren and possibly an early "try-out" for the dome of St Paul's Cathedral. The church stood originally on the bank of the Walbrook stream and it was near here that large numbers of skulls were found in the stream bed. They dated from the destruction of Roman Londinium by Boudica (Boadicea) and are thought to be remains of the civilian residents who were massacred by the Iceni.
St Stephen is known now for its controversial central altar - a large modern sculpture by Henry Moore. It has been condemned by critics but no one should make up their mind until they have seen it. A
A Grade I listed building.
