Yatrus Castle

Yatrus was first an Ancient Roman road station and settlement starting in the 2nd-3rd century AD, and was made into a major fortress in the early 4th century, during the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine I the Great (306-337). It was one of the numerous Roman fortifications along the so called Limes Moesiae, the Lower Danube frontier in the Late Antiquity. It is last mentioned in relation to Byzantine campaigns against the Avars and Slavs in 600. In the 7th-8th century, during the First Bulgarian Empire (632/680-1018), the area of Yatrus was settled by the Bulgars, a settlement which existed until the 10th-11th century. Afterwards, the focus of local settlement and defense was relocated to Novgrad to the south.
