The church of the former Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin is today a school gymnasium, used frequently as a concert hall and for other functions.

Going back to Late Antiquity, an extensive cemetery with hundreds of burials was located here outside the walls on the north side of the former Roman city. Following the last archaeological excavations, many of the Roman sarcophagi, in several layers one on top of the other, have been made accessible to an interested public and can be viewed in small groups during a tour requested through the Cathedral Information. The church of St. Maximin’s Abbey above the cemetery, one of the most important abbeys of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages, was destroyed and rebuilt several times and was later dissolved. www.trier-info.de
