Barry Fitzgerald was born William Joseph Shields in Walworth Road. He joined the
Civil Service, but his love of acting was such that he went into acting as a full-time
profession. He first came to the public's attention with his Abbey portrayal of Captain Jackie Boyle in Juno and the Paycock and as Flutherr Good in the Plough and the Stars.
He then moved to Hollywood where he appeared in films such as The Long Voyage Home, How Green was my Valley and None but the Lonely Heart. He also won an Oscar as best supporting actor for his role in the Bing Crosby film Going My Way.
