The Irish Jewish Museum is in a disused synagogue, which was built in 1917. It consisted of two adjoining terraced houses that could hold about 150 people. In the mid-1970s, mainly because of the local Jewish people moving to the suburbs, the synagogue fell into disuse and remained locked until 1985, when it was re-opened as a museum by the Irish-born former President of Israel, Dr Chaim Herzog the son of Isaac Herzog, the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland.
