Copy of the house of Engels in Manchester

At the time of when Engels lived in Manchester (1850-1870), he provided regular material aid to Karl Marx. This was considered the most fruitful period of collaboration between Marx and Engels.

The museum was founded by the Central Committee of the Communist Party in 1960 and opened to the public in 1962. Its basis was the collection begun in 1920. To quote the Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979), "As a result of its systematic work, the Institute of Marxism-Leninism has assembled a rare collection of materials on the life and work of Marx and Engels and on the revolutionary, labor, and liberation movements. As of 1973, the museum held about 100, 000 exhibit units."

With the collapse of the former Soviet Union, this museum is closed and the fate of its contents unknown.
