The Mermaid is in effect two buildings, with two separate doorways. The Café was established in 1996 by chef-restaurateur Ben Gorman and artist Mark Harrell. The open kitchen gives out onto a long, planked dining room that is glassed on two sides so that while the diners feel part of a busy metropolitan environment they are at the same time being simultaneously cocooned from it.
